Objective/s

  • The objective is to assist the MoD/AF BiH in the reduction of ammunition stockpiles to a manageable level to create preconditions for the establishment of a sustainable ammunition stockpile management system. Under the auspices of the Ammunition, Weapons and Explosive Master Plan (Master Plan), the objective will further contribute to the achievement of the strategic and operational goals of the MoD and AF BiH aimed at increasing the overall efficiency of the AF BiH by addressing the issue of excess, obsolete, faulty ammunition, and military equipment, as outlined in the Master Plan.
  • This output will contribute to increased safety and security of BiH and its population by disposal of 76 tonnes of unsafe ammunition, as follows:
    • 53,097 ammunition fuses;
    • 833 units of white phosphorus ammunition;
    • 2,667 pieces of rocket propelled grenade M80 – 64mm “Zolja”
    • 1,000 pieces of rocket propelled grenades (RPG).

Contributing to the Roadmap goal/s

Goal 6 - Systematically decrease the surplus and destroy seized small arms and light weapons and ammunition.
Goal 7 - Significantly decrease the risk of proliferation and diversion of firearms, ammunition and explosives.

Contributing to the Roadmap overall targets

Goal 6:

  • Systematically dispose all surplus stockpile FAE in an environmentally benign manner.

Goal 7:

  • Ensure safe and secure SALW/firearms and ammunition storage facilities designated based on identified needs and in accordance with international standards.

Key activities implemented up to date

Operational:

  • Completion of disposal contract for 2,667 pieces of rocket propelled grenade M80 64mm “Zolja’,
  • Completion of disposal contract for rocket propelled grenades (RPG) numbering 1,000 pieces,
  • Completion of disposal contract of 833 pieces of white phosphorus ammunition.

 

Coordination:

  • The project is coordinating several funding streams and successfully applying a platform approach in addressing trusted activities within the Ammunition, Weapons and Explosives Master Plan.  Daily coordination with EUFOR is ensuring smooth implementation, although challenges with extremely slow decision-making process within the MOD and Armed Forces remain. Nonetheless, UNDP continues to coordinate with MoD/AF BiH on all issues relate do the overall demilitarization processes in BiH.
