Objective/s

To provide assistance and equipment to the Border Police, Albanian Institute of Scientific Police, and the CSI unit of the Kukes Police Directorate. This Project also focuses to enhance police exchange and cooperation on SALW matters between Albania and Kosovo and is implementing joint activities with UNDP Kosovo.

Contributing to the Roadmap goal/s

Goal 2 - By 2024, ensure that arms control policies and practices in the Western Balkans are evidence based and intelligence led.
Goal 3 - By 2024, significantly reduce illicit flows of firearms, ammunition and explosives (FAE) into, within and beyond the Western Balkans. 
Goal 5 - By 2024, substantially decrease the estimated number of firearms in illicit possession in the Western Balkans.

Contributing to the Roadmap overall targets

Goal 2:

  • Prevent trafficking (smuggling, illicit trade and transit) of FAE through improved processes, equipment and training of targeted law enforcement units.

Goal 3:

  • Strengthen existing bilateral, regional and international mechanisms and encouraging new forms of good practice to counter trafficking of firearms.

Goal 5:

  • Substantially increase number of seized firearms, ammunition and explosives.

Key activities implemented up to date

  • Study visit of Albanian forensic experts to gain knowledge from accredited similar institutions.
  • Joint Training on Community Policing and Intelligence-led policing approach towards SALW Control. 
  • Joint Training on identification and prevention of explosives and explosives precursors.
  • Joint Training on weapons categorization and legal framework regulating the field of SALW Control.
  • Joint Training on weapons conversion, methods and toolmarks used in conversion including ballistic examination and potential data exchange.
  • Participation of Albanian FPI in ENFSI conferences.
  • Provision of SALW-related investigation equipment for the Kukes CSI Sector.
