SEESAC and FRONTEX Continue Cooperation to Enhance Firearms Detection Capabilities for North Macedonia's Border Police and Customs Officials
SEESAC and FRONTEX joined their forces once again to support authorities in the Western Balkans in strengthening their ability to detect firearms. This time, representatives from North Macedonia's Border Police and Customs participated in an extensive Firearms Detection Course at the Police Academy Training Centre in Zagreb, Croatia, from 17 to 21 July 2023.
This Course curricula was based on the Handbook on Firearms for Border Guards and Customs, specifically tailored for the Western Balkans, and designed with inputs from regional authorities. The course included theoretical sessions combined with hands-on exercises, focusing on specialized firearms detection techniques.
By raising awareness and knowledge, the course enhanced participants' proficiency in identifying weapons. The training covered the use of specialized equipment and the evaluation of risk indicators associated with potential firearms smugglers. Additionally, attendees gained valuable insights into post-detection procedures, including firearm identification, key components, additional parts, and explosives.
Previously, SEESAC and FRONTEX organized similar training for representatives from Border Police and Customs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania, and Kosovo1.
The course received support from the European Union through the EU Council Decision 2019/2111, which aims to support arms control activities in Southeast Europe. Participating in this training, North Macedonia further reinforces its commitment to combatting the trafficking and illicit possession of firearms.
