Security enhanced in Montenegro storage location

A storage location and two evidence rooms in Montenegro were brought to international security standards, resulting in improved security of small arms and light weapons (SALW) and ammunition stockpiles in the region.

A partnership between the Ministry of Interior and the Police of Montenegro, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) SEESAC, and the European Union (EU) resulted in the security enhancement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ central small arms and light weapons (SALW) and ammunition storage location in Rogami, as well as two evidence rooms, one within the Forensic Center in Danilovgrad and one at the Police Directorate Security Center of Podgorica. On 13 May 2019, the works have been handed over to the Ministry of Interior and the Police of Montenegro, in the presence of representatives from the EU Delegation in Podgorica, UNDP and SEESAC.

The activities implemented in Rogami, Danilovgrad and Podgorica locations are contributing to international peace and security by combatting the threat posed by the widespread accumulation and illicit trafficking in SALW and their ammunition in and from South East Europe. The total investment in the project under the EU COUNCIL DECISION (CFSP) 2016/2356 of approximately EUR 300,000 involved designing and implementing a new security fence, two entry gates, upgrade of the electrical installation with a power generator, exterior lighting installation with lighting fixtures, and a CCTV system with 31 cameras in the “Rogami” storage location. The investment also includes the security upgrade of one room in the Forensic Centre in Danilovgrad, which has been turned into an evidence room for safekeeping of weapons through basic refurbishment, installation of security doors with access control, CCTV cameras, as well as weapons racks. Furthermore, one evidence room in the Police Directorate Security Center of Podgorica was equipped with weapons safes and racks.

UNDP SEESAC is currently working in South East Europe under the framework of the EU COUNCIL DECISION (CFSP) 2016/2356 and EU COUNCIL DECISION (CFSP) 2018/1788
