WPON Presented as a Practical Example of Sucessful Regional Cooperation in Promoting Gender Equality in the Security Sector Reform, at RACVIAC

On 12-14 March 2013, Dr. Ivan Zverzhanovski - SEESAC Coordinator, took part in a seminar titled Gender and Security Sector Reform (SSR): Implementation of the UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1820 SSR-07-RT, organized by RACVIAC - Centre for Security Cooperation and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of
the Republic of Croatia.
On this occasion, Dr. Zverzhanovski presented the Women Police Officers Network in South East Europe (WPON), as a unique and practical example of successful regional cooperation aimed at mainstreaming the gender perspective into security sector reform.
Furthermore, Dr. Zverzhanovski shared spoke about WPON's achievements, as well as problems encountered during the implementation of the project.
The event gathered more than 40 representatives of parliaments, ombudsman institutions, ministries, governments and NGOs from across the SEE region.
The purpose of the event was to bring together relevant actors and familiarize them with the norms guiding the security sector reform with regards to gender, while focusing on the UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1820, 2004 OSCE Action Plan, European norms and regional instruments for promoting gender equality.
The event was also an opportunity for participants to share their experiences in implementing Action Plans with measures aimed at strengthening the role of women in the public sector.
