The United Nations Presented its 2011 Annual Report

The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Serbia, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have released the 2011 Annual Report, the first since adopting the five-year Country Partnership Strategy for 2011-2015. This first consolidated UN report covers all of the activities and achievements realized by the 30 resident and non-resident agencies, comprising the UNCT in Serbia.

The UNCT implemented a portfolio of projects valued at slightly more than US$108 million, and delivered substantive results in all three strategic areas:  strengthened good governance; enhanced sustainable development and social inclusion; and, increased regional stability and cooperation.

The five year strategy embraces a paradigm that is relevant to Serbia – a middle income and EU candidate country.

Mr. Vuk Jeremic, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, expressed his satisfaction with the achievements in the year 2011, especially in the segment of economy. \"It is important that, in the past two years, we have turned towards the programmes that are linked with the economy, economic growth, employment and social inclusion. Those are the topics that all of humanity is facing nowadays and our programmes have significantly contributed in the fight against those problems\", said Mr. Jeremic.

In 2011 the UN supported the Supreme Audit Institution and the Public Procurement Office certified close to a thousand officials with UN support. This contributes to accountability, good governance and public administrative reform. UN agencies helped digitize hundreds of thousands of personal records, and to register hundreds of individuals at risk of statelessness.  Now individuals can access social services, jobs, and other benefits that characterize an inclusive society. Through myriad programs the UN is assisting Serbia to create jobs. Joint UN programs, such as The Youth Employment and Migration Program, and the SWIFT Program, helped to employ thousands who are vulnerable and economically excluded.

Serbia is increasingly a source of stability and cooperation in the region,” according to William S. Infante, UN Resident Coordinator. Through the Southeast European Cooperation Process and other formal mechanisms, the country has played a leadership role. Belgrade is home to the Southeastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC) which has helped collect and destroy thousands of small arms and light weapons; promoted women in the police and military; and, is enhancing the management of conventional ammunitions and weapons stockpiles.

The UN Country Team is a committed and trusted partner to the government and people of Serbia, and together this partnership will advance the country on a path that ensures a safe, stable and prosperous life for all.
