The Ministry of Defence of Montenegro takes action for Gender Equality

4-5 March 2021, Podgorica, Montenegro

Thirteen women military officers from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Armed Forces (AF) of Montenegro actively participated in a two-day gender awareness seminar, which was organized at the request of the MoD to increase their knowledge on gender as a key element of security sector reform.

The seminar provided practical knowledge and understanding of fundamental terms about gender equality, negative impact of gender-based discrimination in the working environment, and enabled more information about the position of women in the Armed Forces in the Western Balkans and in AF of Montenegro.

Moreover, the participants could learn more about international experiences in integrating gender perspective in the AFs.  Major Sanja Pejović, Gender Advisor in NATO SHAPE delivered a session on NATO policies related to Women, Peace and Security. She also stressed that only security institutions which consider security needs of both women and men can serve their citizens efficiently.

As the seminar enabled information sharing and exchange of experiences, women military officers confirmed that it was a great opportunity for networking.

Based on the request of MoD Montenegro, SEESAC will continue support for the education of women military officers in 2021.

The Strengthening of Regional Cooperation on Gender Mainstreaming in Security Sector Reform in the Western Balkans project is financed by the governments of Norway and the Slovak Republic. With the support of UNDP SEESAC, the project provides the Ministries of Defence and Armed Forces in the Western Balkans with a platform where, over the next years, they can exchange ideas and develop policies to ensure long-term and sustainable inclusion of the gender perspective in defence policies and practices.

Captain Tanja Katnic, Gender Advisor in the Ministry of Defence of Montenegro gave an interview to the local TV station.
