Strengthening Border Police Capabilities to Detect and Prevent Illicit Trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons in Montenegro

From 9 to 13 December 2024, SEESAC organized a specialized Firearms Detection Training for the Border Police of Montenegro in Bar. This training, part of SEESAC's broader efforts to strengthen border security across South East Europe, aimed to improve the skills and capabilities of Montenegrin law enforcement in detecting and preventing the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons (SALW).

Over five days, participants engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions, covering key areas such as identifying smuggling routes, risk analysis methods, and vehicle inspection techniques, while also developing skills in interviewing drivers and passengers, with hands-on exercises to refine their ability to detect concealed weapons and contraband.

The training also included the analysis of case studies that provided insights into emerging trends and best practices in firearms detection. Officers were introduced to the modern challenges of cross-border crime prevention and had the opportunity to apply their new knowledge to real-world scenarios trough simulations.

By enhancing the expertise of the Montenegrin Border Police, this training contributes to the broader regional efforts to combat the illicit trafficking of SALW, promote border security, and ultimately create a safer region for all citizens. The collaborative approach underscores the importance of building strong partnerships in tackling common security challenges.

SEESAC continues to work closely with national and international partners to support the implementation of effective security measures and facilitate the sharing of best practices in the fight against firearms trafficking.

The training was supported by the European Union through the EU Council Decision 2019/2111, underlining the EU’s commitment to combating illicit arms trafficking and ensuring greater security across the South East European region.
