Seminar on the implementation of the SALW collection campaign in Croatia
On 21-22 September 2010 the Croatian Ministry of Interior organized a seminar on the implementation of the SALW collection campaign. The event took place at Regional Arms Control Verification and Implementation Assistance Centre (RACVIAC ) in Zagreb. The opening speeches were given by Ambassador Paul Vandoren, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Oliver Grbic, Chief Police Director, and Ms. Louisa Vinton, UN Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative.
The focus of the seminar was the training 52 newly appointed police prevention officers from 20 police administration in Croatia for the implementation of the arms collection campaign „Less Weapons, Less Tragedies". The participants acquired also knowledge about project management and preparation of prevention programmes. The Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia, which is in the process of initiating a SALW collection campaign, was represented at the seminar. This provided the participants with the opportunity to share experience from the field, on best practices, and to share ideas on improving cooperation between departments and local communities.
The seminar is funded by the European Union (EU) and it is an activity under the EU Council Decision 2010/179/CFSP in support of SEESAC arms control activities in the Western Balkans, in the framework of the EU Strategy to combat the illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition.
