SEESAC Supports a Training on Gender and Peacekeeping
From 11 to 15 February 2013, a regional training titled "Gender and Peacekeeping" organized for both the military and civilian personnel from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is being held in Sarajevo, Bosnia. The training is designed to bring attention to the issue of gender mainstreaming in peacekeeping operations on operational, tactical and strategic levels.
Particular focus of the event is on the effects of armed conflicts on women and children, benefits of including gender perspective in peacekeeping operations, relevant legal frameworks and most importantly on the issue of addressing sexual violence in armed conflict. The training is designed to enable the discussion and learning from practical examples in Congo, Haiti and Ivory Coast.
The training was organized by the United Nations Entity on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in partnership with the Peace Support Operations Training Centre in BiH and UNDP/SEESAC.
SEESAC’s assistance was provided through its flagship project, “Support for Gender Mainstreaming in Security Sector Reform in the Western Balkans” which supports ongoing efforts by the Ministries of Defense (MoD) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia to integrate gender equality into their policies, procedures and practices through regional cooperation.
