SEESAC Organizes 3rd Workshop for Developing a Gender Training Manual for the Serbian MoD and AF

On 15 October, seven (7) gender trainers from the Serbian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Armed Forces (AF) participated in the 3rd Workshop for Developing a Gender Training Manual in Belgrade. The series is organized by UNDP’s SEESAC initiative.

The Gender Training Manual is envisioned to serve as a detailed set of guidelines for gender trainers and other educators, aiding them in implementing and delivering gender awareness seminars to their colleagues in the MoD and AF.

The Manual will feature thematic sections for the gender instructors to apply in the order and layout they see fit. In this way, gender awareness activities can be designed for different target audiences to best fit their needs.

At this 3rd workshop, the gender trainers agreed on the themes which are to be included in the Manual, as well as the deadline for its finalization. The content will consist of the following themes:

  1. definition of gender and gender roles;
  2. discrimination (including gender-based discrimination);
  3. legislative frameworks for gender equality and discrimination in the Republic of Serbia;
  4. gender in Security Sector Reform;
  5. UNSCR 1325;
  6. the National Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325; and
  7. mechanisms for gender equality in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces.

The gender trainers in the Serbian MoD and SAF are part of a regional network of gender trainers established in March 2014. The trainers were certified after having partaken in the Regional Gender Train-the-Trainers Course delivered by the Nordic Center for Gender in Military Operations.

ABOUT THE GENDER EQUALITY IN THE MILITARY PROJECT

SEESAC’s Gender Equality in the Military project aims to create a more conductive environment for the advancement of women in the military in the Western Balkans. Within this as its goal, SEESAC is supporting the Ministries of Defense in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia in their effort to ensure better integration, retention and professional development for women in the armed forces.  SEESAC also works to foster women’s participation in decision-making, as well as gender sensitive change in the organizational culture of the military.
