North Macedonia continues the efforts to harmonize its arms control legislation with the EU Acquis

On 20 January 2021, the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of North Macedonia, with support provided by UNDP SEESAC, organized an Advisory Meeting on the Harmonization of the Legal Framework on Arms Control with the EU Acquis.

Participants included representatives from relevant ministries, who are members of the working group established to this purpose, SEESAC Chief Technical Adviser and legal expert assisting the process.

During this meeting, tables of concordance on the draft Law on Explosives for Civil Use, developed with SEESAC’s support with the aim to monitor harmonization of this law with the EU Acquis, were thoroughly discussed. In addition, the working group dedicated a specific session to the review of the draft Law on Development, Production and Trade of Military Equipment.

This advisory meeting was organized in the framework of the implementation of the EU Council Decision (CFSP) 2018/1788 of 19 November 2018 in support of the implementation of the Regional Roadmap on combating illicit arms trafficking in the Western Balkans and it directly contributes to the achievement of Goal 1 of the Roadmap on ensuring that arms control legislation is in place, fully harmonized with the EU regulatory framework and other related international obligations and standardized across the region by 2023.
