Firearm Experts Meet on Jahorina for the 21st SEEFEN to Strengthen Southeast Europe’s Fight Against Arms Trafficking and Misuse

From November 19–20, 2024, the 21st Regional Meeting of the South East Europe Firearms Experts Network (SEEFEN) brought together senior police investigators, customs officials, prosecutors, ballistic experts, and border police representatives from six Western Balkan jurisdictions, Moldova, and Ukraine, as well as representatives of regional and international organizations on Jahorina.

Organized by SEESAC, the SEEFEN meetings serve as a platform for exchanging knowledge, sharing best practices, and fostering regional cooperation to combat the trafficking of firearms and explosives in and out of Southeast and East Europe.

The two-day event focused on enhancing expertise and exploring innovative approaches to some of the most pressing issues in this area - featuring engaging panel discussions on:

  • Investigative Practices in Firearms-Related Crimes
  • Challenges in Ballistic Laboratory Accreditation
  • Integrated Border Management
  • Special Investigative Measures

Following the panel discussions, participants engaged in working groups to develop actionable recommendations, and foster dialogue on practical solutions, particularly emphasizing the need for harmonized protocols and stronger communication channels among jurisdictions.

The meeting underscored the critical role of regional and international cooperation in addressing firearm-related challenges. By connecting law enforcement agencies, and international partners, SEEFEN continues to build a robust network of experts dedicated to enhancing public safety and curbing the illicit trafficking of firearms and explosives.

The Southeast Europe Firearms Experts Network is supported by the European Union through the EU Council Decision (CFSP) 2019/2111 in support of SEESAC disarmament and arms control activities in Southeast Europe.
