BiH Meeting of the Parliamentary Forum on SALW
On 29 October 2010, the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), with the support of SEESAC, organized a conference on the activities of BiH institutions in the control of arms imports and exports. The event, which took place within the framework of the Western Balkans Parliamentary Forum on SALW, was attended by Members of Parliament (MPs), high ranking representatives of the executive, representatives of civil society organizations (CSO) representatives of international
organizations and MPs from Montenegro and Serbia. Mr. Adem Huskić, Member of the Joint Committee on Defence and Security, welcomed participants on behalf of the Parliamentary Assembly, and stated that the event was further evidence of the efficiency of parliamentary oversight of the security sector in general and the arms trade in particular. Introductory addresses were also given by Mr. Dragiša Mekić, Assistant Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations; Mr. Yuri Afanasiev, UN Resident
Coordinator in Bosnia and Herzegovina; and Mr. Diman Dimov, SEESAC Team Leader.
In a comprehensive overview of the system of controls of exports and imports of controlled goods in BiH, Mr. Momir Brajić, representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH spoke on the EU Code of Conduct on Arms Exports, while the Regional Report on Arms Exports was presented by Diman Dimov. Mr. Dragisa Mekić gave a detailed overview of the procedures for importing and exporting controlled goods. Finally, Brigadier Mladen Marinkovic, of the Ministry of Defence of BiH spoke on the procedures and activities for reducing the excess stockpiles held by the Armed Forces. During the discussion, participants were also addressed by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Marina Pendeš. The event closed with the commitment to continue organizing such gatherings in 2011.
