On 13 May 2010 the Government of Serbia adopted the Strategy on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in the Republic of Serbia for the period 2010-2015. The Strategy represents a major accomplishment of the Serbian institutions in their efforts to establish a holistic approach towards SALW control. June 1st, 2010 - SALW Coordination Meeting

On 1 June 2010 SEESAC hosted SALW Coordination Meeting in Belgrade, Serbia. The meeting brought together several international organizations involved in projects on small arms and light weapons and stockpiles of conventional ammunition. Representatives of NAMSA, the OSCE  Secretariat, UNDP/BCPR and the European Union presented their work on SALW control.  ... read more

On 25 May 2010 the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Montenegro and SEESAC organized an industry outreach workshop on licensing procedures of import and export of arms and military equipment. On the 24th of May 2010 Mr Alexander Avanessov, UNDP Resident Representative in Montenegro, met with Mr. Ivan Brajovic, the Minister of Interior Affairs and Public Administration. Among other issues that were discussed was the implementation of UNDP/SEESAC’s project activities in the Republic of Montenegro, which will be funded by the European Union.   ... read more

On 20 May 2010 UNDP Croatia and the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Croatia jointly organized this year's first large event in the collection campaign "Less Weapons, Less Tragedies". The event, aimed at raising awareness of the threat posed by SALW possession, took place in Slavonski Brod and represents the continuation of campaign activities started back in 2007. The event was opened by Mr. Zeljko Prsa, Head of the Brodsko–Posavska Police Administration, by Ms. Ilijana Vrbat-Pejic, Deputy Mayor of Slavonski Brod, Ms. Klara Scuka, representative of the Brodsko-Posavska County and Mr. Hans Risser, UNDP Croatia Senior Advisor and Programme Manager.  ... read more

On the 12th of May 2010, the Regional Meeting of the Western Balkans Parliamentary Forum on SALW was held in Belgrade, Serbia, hosted by SEESAC and the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). SEESAC has published a study report "Marking of Imported Firearms under the UN Firearms Protocol." The Protocol against Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Their Parts and Components and Ammunition prescribes that states should adopt and implement appropriate measures to ensure marking of firearms at time of manufacture, import and transfers from government stocks to civilian use. The unique marking of each firearm identifies it and forms the basis on which records are kept and firearms are traced. The UN Firearms Protocol sets the minimum standards which must be implemented in domestic law. States are encouraged to adopt more rigorous measures in domestic law wherever they would be considered useful for preventing and combating organized crime.  ... read more
