Croatia: SALW Storage Upgrade Activities

One of SEESAC’s efforts at stifling illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW by increasing safety and security of SALW and their ammunitions in the South Eastern Europe region is currently ongoing in the Republic of Croatia and is conducted in support of the Croatian Ministry of Interior (MoI) and in collaboration with UNDP Croatia.

To identify the location, the refurbishment of which would be most beneficial for the overall safety and security of the MoI’s stockpiles of SALW and their ammunitions – within the limits of the available funding - the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Croatia conducted an assessment of the storages in 19 police administrations. As a result, MURAT storage facility in Zagreb was chosen for refurbishment.

In 2011, the Ministry of Interior conducted a joint assessment of the MURAT storage facility with UNDP in order to establish the exact works and equipment required for refurbishment. Based on the assessment, the refurbishment successfully took place in November 2011. The storage MURAT covers 8000m2 and has three closed infrastructure objects (around 600m2).

SEESAC’s storage upgrade activities are funded by the European Union (EU), under the EU COUNCIL DECISION 2010/179/CFSP, dated 11 March 2010, expressing support for SEESAC arms control activities in the Western Balkans, within the framework of the EU Strategy to combat the illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition.
