SALW Storage Upgrade Activities
![]() |
Another way in which illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition is made possible is through poor maintenance and lack of security at storage facilities. For this reason SEESAC has joined forces with several governments in South Eastern Europe region interested in upgrading their respective storage facilities and increasing security of stockpiles.
To date, SEESAC has assisted the reconstruction of the “Taraš” ammunition storage site in Danilovgrad, Montenegro, the storage facility for safekeeping of ammunition cartages in Skoplje, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as well as the central weapons storage facility "Murat" in Croatia. Currently, upgrades of three storage sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina are pending while several other sites in the region have been assessed.
These SEESAC activities are made possible by the European Union (EU), under the EU COUNCIL DECISION 2010/179/CFSP, dated 11 March 2010, in support of SEESAC arms control activities in the Western Balkans, in the framework of the EU Strategy to combat the illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition.
