Regional SALW Stockpile Management Course

In order to help countries in the region increase their capacities in the area of stockpile management procedures and thereby increase the physical control over the existing storages in the region, SEESAC, in cooperation with UNDP Bosnia and Herzegovina and with the support of the European Union, has organized the Regional Course on Stockpile Management.

The course consists of three, 5-day modules, which are taking place during the fall of 2011 and are covering the following topics:

Module I - September 12-16 - Planning and Managing Stockpile Locations
Module II – October 10-14 - Inventory Management and Accounting Control Measures
Module III - November 14-18 - Transportation of SALW and Associated Ammunition

The course is designed for members of the ministries of defence and interior responsible for material resources. The course is being offered to the inspection teams and officers in order to help familiarize them with best practices in stockpile management techniques. Among the participating countries are: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

The modules are taking place at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Sarajevo, and are conducted by a team of prominent experts from the Western Balkans and Germany. The course curriculum is in line with international standards and best practices in stockpile management with special emphasis on safety and security of stockpiles and quality of stockpile procedures. Because of its regional character, the participants also benefit from the exchange of experiences and best practices identified by their colleagues from the region who are facing similar challenges.

The activity is funded by the European Union (EU), under the EU COUNCIL DECISION 2010/179/CFSP, dated 11 March 2010, in support of SEESAC arms control activities in the Western Balkans, in the framework of the EU strategy to combat the illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition.
