Through its EU funded activities, SEESAC was able to assist the government of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia make strides towards achieving European standards and complying with its international commitments as they relate to marking and tracing of firearms.
In collaboration with the local UNDP team, SEESAC provided for the enhancement of the existing national identification systems in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The support for record-keeping included the upgrade of software that identifies not only the weapons in civilian possession but also operations related to the management of weapons, ammunition and/or explosives in depots, approved warehouses or armories, such as a local police station or central storage site. It is now thus possible to identify weapons, the users and the storage location of equipment, when not in use.
SEESAC also secured a procurement of adequate technical equipment for the enhancement of record-keeping capacity by providing 100,000 pcs of boxes for the storage of ammunition projectiles (hunting rifles, civilian firearms and smaller caliber guns) as well as the infrastructure upgrade of a record-keeping storage facility within the Ministry of Interior.
All activities have been finalized and the official handover of a storage facility for safekeeping of ammunition cartridge cases took place on 26 July 2011.
This activity was funded by the European Union (EU), under the EU COUNCIL DECISION 2010/179/CFSP, dated 11 March 2010, in support of SEESAC arms control activities in the Western Balkans, in the framework of the EU Strategy to combat the illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition.
