Professional Development

Another important role of WPON is to assist women police officers grow their advocacy capacities, therefore empowering them to act as influential advocates of gender sensitive police practice in their respective police forces. WPON provides development opportunities for women police officers both at home and abroad.

In May 2011, WPON organized one such workshop, in close cooperation with South East Police Chiefs Association (SEPCA) and Ministry of Interior of Croatia. The workshop dealt with issues such as gender and security, gender mainstreaming, the legal framework (including UNSC 1325 and National Action Plans for the implementation) for gender equality, recruitment and retention of women police offices, cooperation with civil society and advocacy for gender equality in policing. The training was delivered by DCAF, and was funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Swiss Development Cooperation.

It was also through WPON’s professional development framework that WPON Executive Committee members attended the Annual Conference of the International Association of Women Police (IAWP) in August 2011.

WPON also facilitates exchange of information on scholarships and additional educational opportunities for women police officers, and provides information on professional development opportunities, both in training and international positions.
