SEESAC takes part in the 2nd OSCE Gender Equality Review Conference

SEESAC participated in the 2nd OSCE Gender Equality Review Conference organized by the Austrian Chair of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the OSCE Gender Section and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODHIR) on 12 – 13 June 2017 in Vienna.

Austrian Minister of Foreign for Family and Youth Ms. Sophie Karmasin opened the Conference, followed by remarks from ODHIR First Deputy Director Ms. Katarzyna Gardapkhadze and Ambassador Paul Bekkers, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director UN Women. Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Justin Trudeau and United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director UN Women Ms. Lakshmi Puri addressed the conference via video.

Ms. Balon moderated the Parallel Working Session One on Gender Mainstreaming in the Security Sector, that focused on identifying the best practices and formulating recommendations to increase women’s participation in the security sector, including both armed forces and police. Panel members included Ms. Ainuru Altybaeva, Member of Parliament from Kyrgyzstan, Ms. Pina Martinez Montserrat, President of the European Network of Policewomen, Ms. Dita Nowicka, Director of OSCE Border Management Staff College and Brigadier General Gordana Garašić, Deputy Director of RACVIAC- Centre for Security Cooperation.

The 2nd OSCE Gender Equality Review Conference provides a platform for representatives of OSCE participating States, executive structures, civil society organizations, international organizations and academia to identify progress achieved in the implementation of the 2004 OSCE Action Plan for the Promotion of Gender Equality, challenges and gaps, emerging issues as well as good practices and areas for action in the short and medium term.
