SALW Storages in Bosnia and Herzegovina More Secure
41 new doors were installed at 4 SALW and ammunition storage sites of the Ministry of Defense of BiH
Remarks were delivered by Brigadier General Dragan Vukovic of the BiH Ministry of Defence, Ms. Natalia Dianiskova, from the European Union Delegation to BiH and Mr. Slobodan Tadic before the UNDP BiH.
The improved security of the storages was supported by the European Union
The improved security of the storages has been made possible thanks to the support provided by the European Union, under the EU Council Decision 2010/179/CFSP dated 11 March 2010, in support of UNDP/SEESAC arms control activities across the Western Balkans, within the framework of the EU Strategy to combat the illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition.
On the occasion of the handover ceremony, remarks were delivered by Brigadier General Dragan Vuković, Deputy Commander of the Support Command of the BiH Ministry of Defence, Ms. Natalia Dianiskova, Head of Operations Section for the Social Development, Civil Society and Cross Border Cooperation at the European Union Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Mr. Slobodan Tadić, Head of Programme, UNDP BiH.
Emphasizing the importance of the security and safety of all BiH citizens, Ms. Diansikova stated: “During the implementation of this project in 2012, fourty one doors were installed on the arms and ammunition storages „KULA1“ near Mrkonjić Grad, „RABIĆ“ near Derventa, „TEUFIK BUZA“ near Visoko and „KRUPA“ near Pazarić.”
"By improving the safety and security of four storage locations of the Ministry of Defence, we are reducing the risk of potential accidents, which further fosters peace, security and development of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its citizens." said Mr Tadic.
The „Krupa“ storage site is the last of the four arms and ammunition depots whose safety and security were improved within the framework of the EU funded project of Support to Arms Control in the Western Balkans, jointly implemented by the BiH Ministry of Defence, South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC) and United National Development Programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP BiH).
The handover ceremony marks not only the completion of these storage sites upgrades, but it also is the last of the SEESAC activities funded by the EU Council Decision 2010/179/CFSP. The project strengthened safety and security throughout the region through a series of activities including SALW destructions in Croatia and Serbia, SALW awareness and collection campaigns in Croatia and Serbia, SALW storage upgrades in Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, improvement of capacities to manage SALW storages among the responsible authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and improved SALW marking, tracing and registration capacities in Montenegro and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
