Report - Establishing the Southeast Europe Women Police Officers Network

In 2008 the South East Europe Police Chiefs Association (SEPCA) proposed the establishment of the Southeast Europe Women Police Officers Network, with the aim of promoting and applying the principles of gender equality.

During an expert meeting, held in Belgrade in March 2009 it was agreed that all police services interested in joining the Network would conduct research, in order to obtain the baseline data, regarding both the current status and role of women law enforcement officers in national police services in the region, and the possibilities of their future cooperation within such a Network.

The findings of the research are presented in recently published report “Establishing the Southeast Europe Women Police Officers Network”. The publishing of the report was financially supported by UNDP Gender Thematic Trust Fund through regional project  “Support for gender mainstreaming in policing practices in SEE” which is implemented by SEESAC.

The report covers the issues of recruitment and admission of women in the police service, education and training, career development, an overview of normative regulations, discrimination, and the issue of creating associations as a way to improve quality and efficiency of the police work, as well as gender equality.

The results of the study are accompanied by a set of recommendations.
