17,000 weapons destroyed in Serbia

The joint project between SEESAC and the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia for disposal of surplus and confiscated weapons resulted in the destruction of 17,000 small arms and light weapons. The destruction took place on 03 October 2009 at the premises of the Recycling Center in the Belgrade suburb of Zeleznik. The weapons destroyed included machine guns, submachine guns, granade launchers, carabines, hunting rifles, pistols and air rifles.

Mr Ivica Dacic, Minister of Interior, thanked SEESAC for the support in this project and announced a new collection campaign for illegal firearms. SEESAC and the Ministry of Interior will also continue working on the adoption of a national strategy on small arms and light weapons.

SEESAC's goal for 2009 is to follow up on this successful project and develop an activity for the destruction of another 10,000 weapons held by the Ministry of Interior.

The destruction of 17,000 weapons was made possible through the generous support of Norway.
