Helping Keep Citizens Safe - Facilitating regional security through the meeting of trainers for physical security and stockpile management of small arms and light weapons and their ammunition

Trainers for Physical Security and Stockpile Management of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and Their Ammunition met in Belgrade to share their experiences.

On 9-10 April 2019, trainers from the Ministries of Interior of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Republic of North Macedonia, Republic of Serbia and Kosovo* met in Belgrade for the Regional Meeting of Trainers for Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM) of SALW, to share good practices and experiences following the completion of their trainings.

This Regional Meeting follows the successful implementation of the Regional Training of Trainers for PSSM organized in Durres, Albania, on 13-17 November 2017, which provided police personnel with the necessary skills for transferring their knowledge in managing the armament and ammunition stockpiles with colleagues in their institutions.

The two-day meeting followed a discussion-based exercise that assessed the results of and the follow-up actions to the training. Participants presented their work conducted based on the trainings in the field of policy improvement (including standard operating procedures, guidelines or other documents) with specific examples and case studies, enabling them to benefit from the exchange of experiences and best practices identified by their colleagues from the region who are facing similar challenges. The latest developments in the field of arms control, particularly the new categorization of weapons in accordance with the European Union firearms directive and the precursors regulation, was also addressed in the meeting.

The past trainings and the meeting are made possible by the European Union (EU), which is providing the funds under the European Union Council Decision 2016/2356/CFSP to support SEESAC arms control activities in the Western Balkans in the framework of the EU Strategy to combat the illicit accumulation and trafficking of SALW and their ammunition.
